Javelin Trucking commenced operations on 01 March 1986, when it was started by Peter Williamson, who still the Managing Director today, together with the late Alf Cloete, Jose Gomes and the financial assistance of the late James Jeffery of Arrow Heavy Haulage. Peter had then been in the road transport industry for over fifteen years and had held various positions in large organizations.
Peter and Alf started the business from humble backgrounds, operating first from Hime Lane in Jacobs, and then later relocating to the current property at Vintner Place Prospecton.
The initial fleet comprised of a truck and two trailers and was used for local deliveries within the Durban area, the customers being Chrome Chemicals and Lever Brothers. Javelin shortly thereafter secured their first major contract for edible oil transport to Boksburg and has been successful in renewing this ever since. Peter was closely involved with all aspects of the operation, including marketing, scheduling, and even driving when the need arose. Alf Cloete concentrated on raising finances and attended to other financial and administration functions.
The accounting fun ction during the first three years was performed by Edith Williamson from home. Sharmla Naicker was employed in 1988 as a receptionist / clerk.
In 1989 the company moved to Vintner Place, Prospecton, a property that was yet to be developed, consisting of two portable quick-jack offices. The main administration building, workshop and washbay were completed in 1991. By this time the company had grown to fifteen truck tractors and twenty-five trailers. Staff and customer base had also increased considerably.
Peter and Alf bought out the shares of James Jeffery and Jose Gomes in 1991, with Alf finally retiring in 1997, and selling his shares to Neil Rutenberg and John Mckay.
This was the start of the Javrow Group, as Neil had brought Arrow Bulk Carriers into the fold.
In mid 1999, Imperial Holdings acquired sixty percent of Javelin Trucking with Peter and Neil retaining the other forty percent in equal shares.
Neil remained MD of Arrow Bulk Carriers, and later formed Fuelogic Group, together with empowerment partners, where he is presently the CEO
