The transport operation is manned by a dedicated and experienced team, each having undergone both, on-the-job and academic training in their appropriate fields. All controllers have been through the RAU Transport Diploma course.
As a responsible operator, in addition to standard driver training, Javelin trains it’s drivers and staff in the following areas:
- Training and retraining of safe working procedures (via a driver manual which includes all internal policies, procedures and work instructions);
- Hazardous product handing;
- Basic first-aid training;
- Aids awareness;
- Defensive driving;
- Basic fire-fighting
- Fatigue management
- And any other training required to fulfil both customer and operational requirements.
We have a training committee that meets quarterly to discuss training needs and requirements for all staff. All staff, from the administration department to the general workers has an opportunity to gain or increase their knowledge by training (within their scope of employment) that is provided by Javelin.
We endeavour to use unit standard aligned or SAQA approved service providers in order to satisfy our sector’s SETA requirements which is the TETA (Transport Education and Training Authority).
The above forum also discusses employment equity issues.
Truck Tractors
A fleet of sixty eight truck tractors are at the companies disposal, comprising of International Eagles, DAF's and Renault Kerax's for the long distance operations, and the older Mercedes Benz Powerliner for the local operations. The average age is two and a half years. A fully qualified outsourced agent maintenance team is based permanently at the depot in Prospecton, increasing vehicle availability and reducing unnecessary dead kilometers. All trucks are equipped with fixed cell phones and are monitored via the C-Track satellite system
Tanker Trailers
Over 110 semi-trailers and a further 85 pup trailers make up the trailer fleet. Stainless-steel, mild steel and aluminium type trailers are available to accommodate the various products that need to be transported. In recent years, trailers have been custom built to meet specific safety requirements. These and the older trailers are continuously undergoing upgrades to meet changing requirements. Javelin has an in-house tanker trailer workshop which maintains the trailer fleet.
Depot Facilities
The depot at Prospecton has been developed over time from a grassy and muddy piece of land purchased in 1989, to a fully equipped transport facility, capable of handling over fifty vehicles. It is strategically situated close to both refineries and other bulk storage facilities at Island View and Maydon Wharf. The eight-thousand square metre property borders Reunion Park and protected mangroves. Javelin has taken the responsibility of protecting and caring for these mangroves as a contribution to the environment.
The depot consists of fully equipped workshops, wash bays, fuel storage tanks, admin offices and parking facilities. The fleet parking area has a sophisticated automated underground catch pit to mitigate environmental damage in the case of major spillage.
We are committed to providing our customers with clean tankers for their loads with the objective of avoiding any contamination. Each tanker is issued with a cleanliness certificate prior to loading.
An additional depot is being rented in Murrayfield with a second washbay to improve turnaround times of the vehicles. The marine division is currently being managed at this depot.
